Labrador Retriever
The most popular dog in America. And for good reason.
Labs are everywhere. Parks. Beaches. Backyards. Retirement homes. They're the friendliest dogs on the planet. If you want a dog that loves everyone, this is your dog.
What They're Like
Labs are happy dogs. They wag their tails at strangers. They want to be friends with cats. They think every person is their new best friend.
They're smart too. Easy to train. They want to please you. That's why they're used as service dogs, search and rescue dogs, and hunting dogs.
Exercise Needs
These dogs need to move. A lot. At least an hour of exercise every day. Walks, runs, swimming, fetch. They love it all.
If you don't exercise them, they'll get fat. And bored. A bored Lab is a destructive Lab. They'll chew your shoes. Your furniture. Maybe your walls.
Health
Labs are generally healthy but prone to some issues:
- Hip and elbow dysplasia
- Obesity (they love to eat)
- Ear infections (those floppy ears trap moisture)
Who Should Get One
Families. Active singles. Retirees who like to walk. Anyone who wants a loyal, friendly, easy-going dog.
Who shouldn't: People who work long hours. Couch potatoes. People who hate slime (Labs drool).
The Verdict
If you want a dog that's easy to love, easy to train, and always happy to see you, you can't go wrong with a Lab. They're the whole package.
