How Much Exercise Does Your Dog Actually Need?
Too little and they're crazy. Too much and they're tired.
Every dog is different. A Chihuahua has different needs than a Husky. A puppy has different needs than a senior.
Here's how to figure out what's right for your dog.
By Breed Size
Tiny dogs (under 20 lbs): 30-60 minutes daily. Short walks. Indoor play. That's enough.
Medium dogs (20-60 lbs): 60 minutes daily. Brisk walks. Some running. Playtime in the yard.
Large dogs (60-100 lbs): 60-90 minutes daily. Long walks. Swimming. Hiking.
Giant dogs (100+ lbs): 45-60 minutes daily. Don't overdo it. Their joints need protection.
By Life Stage
Puppies: Five minutes per month of age, twice a day. A 3-month-old puppy needs about 15 minutes per walk.
Adults: The ranges above. Adjust based on your dog's energy level.
Seniors: Less than they used to need. But still important to keep moving. Short, easy walks. Gentle play.
Signs You're Not Exercising Enough
- Destructive behavior (chewing, digging)
- Excessive barking
- Restlessness at night
- Weight gain
- Hyperactivity when guests arrive
Signs You're Exercising Too Much
- Lethargy after walks
- Limping or soreness
- Excessive panting
- Reluctance to move after exercise
The Right Balance
Your dog should come home tired. Not exhausted. Tired enough to chill. Not so tired they're sore.
Watch your dog. Learn their signals. Adjust accordingly.
